About

My name is Julia. My husband’s name is Matt. Together, we bought a 129 acre farm.

Here’s a little bit about us for those that don’t know us.

Why a farm?

This is a question we get a lot, and I still don’t have a good answer. Matt and I both grew up on the outskirts of rural areas, but we don’t really have a farming background. As children, we both had backyard chickens, Matt’s first job (when he was 8 years old) was picking potatoes for a local farmer, and I had a pet ducks and geese.

Matt's first tractor, age 2. Of course, mine's bigger.

We both like the peace and quiet of the country. We like having a large property that’s all ours. We can go for a hike through our own woods, we can’t see our neighbour’s houses and no one’s going to construct a huge subdivision in our backyard.

We’re not planning on becoming farmers, although we may return to our roots and raise some chickens one day. For now we’re just enjoying the space and the atmosphere on our farm.

Do you have any animals?

Chickens, ducks and geese are definitely on my list (a goat is on Matt’s). In the meantime, we spend lots of time snuggling our furry family members, our amazing (female) barn cat Ralph and our rescue dog Baxter.

How did you and Matt meet?

Matt and I met in high school. He watched me from afar for four months before he finally worked up the courage–with the help of the “Rocky” soundtrack and push-ups–to ask me out. I’d noticed Matt in class, but didn’t know anything about him, including his last name!

The good news is that since that night we’ve gotten to know each other a lot better. We went to the same university and over the years have developed a very strong partnership that allows us to work together very well and take on big projects–like a 129 acre farm.

  3. Hi Julia ! ( and a big Hello to Matt too!)
Sounds like our lives are running parallel with this whole country thing. I hope you come to love it as much as we do. We have friends who ask us why we live so far away ‘in the middle of no where’. We don’t answer right away. We let them visit. They come for one day and leave ONE WEEK later 🙂 haha!

  4. Julia,
Your blogs are amazing.Your posts are very detailed and give very good insight into farm living in Canada. Your passion for farm life shows through your blogs. Please never stop blogging :-). Most people I have come across, including my better half, cannot get over the ease and comfort of cities.I only wish , had they been totally conscious and present when they first breathed in the sweet smell of earth they would know what they are missing every day in the cities.
I stumbled across your blog while researching farm financing. The bankers are acting really tough and I have no clue where to go for financing. Basically I come from the foothills of Himalayas in India where my dad owns couple of acres in Mango orchards. I work in the IT sector, have no intention of getting into farming in the near term, but yes in the long run I definitely intend to get into greenhouse/orchards/vineyards etc.

Please can you connect me with your mortgage agent/credit unions and other necessary agents that can ease my pain to finance a Farm Land ?

Your help will be extremely appreciated.
    Regards
    Vin
