When we first moved to the farm (seven years ago), these forsythia bushes were absolutely loaded with blooms by April 2. So each year, I measure the arrival of spring by when our forsythia flowers. This week, they’ve finally bloomed—a month and a half after our first spring, but not too far off every other spring since. Does that mean warmer weather is coming soon? . Also, this year they’re actually blooming. Some years we’ve had only 2 or 3 blossoms (and we’ve done no pruning the past few years). I’ve been collecting all of the tips on how to prune forsythia this year, and I think they’re going to get a major haircut in a couple of weeks. My Mom and I have always looked a lot alike. I'm curious if the baby will be the same. More important than appearance are all of the lessons I learned from my Mom. Everything at the farm is a work in progress, especially this flower garden. The ferns were here when we moved in. I put the craggy rock in the middle of them. Watching the ferns unfurl against the grey stone is a nice spring sight. Soon enough they'll drape over the rock, and I'll be thinking (as I do every year) that we have too many ferns, and I need to transplant some.
